Oh the joys of a brand new baby! Both amazing and shocking! And on top of getting to know your new baby, you have to adjust to a new normal; night-time feeding, sleep deprivation, sibling adjustment, and the list goes on and on. And you’ve decided to cloth diaper on top of it all?!? Are you crazy!?!
Actually, No, you’re not! You just know a good thing when you see it!
We all know that cloth diapers have come a LONG way since pins and rubber pants. Let’s face it, it’s easier! But even though it’s easier to cloth diaper, it can still be difficult to adjust when your baby arrives. At Luludew, we really try and get you through the first two weeks when we meet with you before your baby is born. We demonstrate simple techniques to put on a cloth diaper successfully and the best part? Everyone gets to practice! Here are two recent demos when Kate S. brought in her sister and friend to learn together and Kate & Nicholas along with Kate’s mom practiced on our baby pig. Notice something about both of these families? They’re all smiling!
Once you have all your diapering supplies ready at home and your baby arrives, there are some really important things to keep in mind to get over the hump and start enjoying your decision to cloth diaper:
FIT: This is probably the single most important thing to keep in mind! A cloth diaper is simple: it absorbs moisture, and the diaper cover protects your baby’s clothes from getting wet. That’s it! So fit is super important. If you select a cover that is too large, you may experience leaks (*leaking is not common) If leaks are happening, something is wrong. Try looking at the cover. Are the leg holes snug around your baby’s thighs? You should be able to slip 1 finger in and it should feel snug. Also is the cloth diaper completely inside the cover? There should never be any cloth peeking out. And lastly, the cover should ideally fit flat against your baby’s belly button (*once the stump fall off)
ABSORBENCY: If you’ve got the fit of the diaper cover down, now it’s time to look at the actual diaper. We always start our families off with a super teeny tiny newborn diaper. Although small, it is very absorbent. It usually fits babies up to 12lbs (*average). Here’s a simple way to check if your baby is in the right diaper with the right absorbency no matter what their weight is: 1. When you check your baby every 2-3 hours, is the diaper fully saturated? Yes? It’s time to change up in size!
SIZING: Size is also an important part of cloth diapering. As your baby grows, they will hold their bowel movements for longer periods of time. For this reason, when they do eliminate, your baby requires a larger diaper to contain everything in. When you are putting the cloth diaper on your baby, is it hard to bring it up over their belly? Or are you struggling to snappi the diaper in place because there is not enough fabric to wrap around their waist? Yes? It’s time to change up in size!
One of the great things about being part of the Luludew family is that we are here to help get the exact fit, absorbency and size for your baby. In addition, sizing up is as easy as a call or email away! We’ll take care of exchanging sizes with ease at no extra cost. It’s always a good idea to keep in mind that cloth diapering is a journey that takes effort to master. Once you get the hang of cloth diapering, it’s second nature! It is quite amazing to diaper your baby in the most nature fibers available and also make a significant impact on the world we live in.
