The Journey Behind the Passion
Kathy Killebrew’s passion for birth work began in college during a video project on gestational development. “I was fascinated by the miraculous journey of development in the womb,” she recalls. However, the spark really ignited when she attended a birth class taught by a long-time certified nurse midwife. “I knew I had to be in this field someday,” she shares.
This early exposure, combined with a childhood spent accompanying her mother to visit new moms, paved the way for a career focused on supporting and educating families on one of life’s most beautiful and transformative experiences—bringing a baby into the world.
Comprehensive Services for Expecting and New Parents
Imagine Your Birth, led by Kathy Killebrew, offers a 9-week series that covers a wide range of topics essential for expecting parents, including labor and delivery, breastfeeding, and hospital procedures. The classes are designed to empower parents with the knowledge they need to make informed decisions during labor, postpartum, and beyond. What sets these classes apart is that they offer a holistic approach. “You don’t have to sign up for labor classes and then sign up again for post-labor topics. You get it all in this series,” Kathy explains.
Each couple receives evidence-based information and materials that they can use not only during pregnancy and labor but throughout their early parenting journey. This comprehensive support enables parents to confidently navigate their birth experience and beyond, with many expressing how empowered and prepared they feel after completing the series.
Incorporating Eco-Friendly Practices
At Imagine Your Birth, sustainability is a key value. In the baby care class, expectant parents are introduced to the idea of using consignment shops for baby clothes, toys, and other necessities, helping to reduce waste and save money. The topic of diapering is also discussed in-depth, with a focus on the environmental and cost benefits of cloth diapers. “Everything has risen in cost, so couples want to save money. It costs a lot more for throw-away diapers for sure!” Kathy emphasizes. Imagine Your Birth encourages families to explore cloth diapering options and to consider companies like Luludew for convenient, eco-friendly diaper services.
A Memorable Story of Empowerment
One story that stands out in Kathy’s career as a birth educator is of a couple who came to her class while expecting their second child. After just one class, the mother shared that she had learned more than she had during her entire weekend course with her first pregnancy. The knowledge gained during the 9-week series empowered the couple to make informed decisions about their birth plan. The mother switched care providers and birth locations to create the environment she needed for the birth she desired. The result was a beautiful, healing birth experience that left the couple feeling confident and empowered.
Supporting Cloth Diapering Families
When it comes to cloth diapering, Kathy provides families with valuable information on the benefits and options available. “My job is just to inform couples on the benefits and any downsides so they can make the most informed decision for themselves,” she says. For those who are unsure where to start, she directs them to Luludew for expert advice, support, and convenient cloth diaper services.
